Child murder is socially and ethically considered a crimen atrox, an act that breaks irredeemably the natural bond between parent and child. The authors - reviewing national and international literature - identify the major risk factors of the victims and of the perpetrators, and also the underlying motivations for such actions. In particular, the authors analyse the data of the Eures research on family homicides in Italy - during the period 2000 to 2018 - in order to determine the trend and frequency of the phenomenon, highlight the victims and perpetrators’ main characteristics, and suggest achievable preventive interventions.

Keywords: Filicide, murder, risk factors, family, evaluation, clinical criminology and forensic psychiatry.
