To build, not rebuild. War damage and restoration in ancient Brescia, 1944-1954 (by Gian Paolo Treccani) - ABSTRACT: Brescia’s historic town center, although the city had no significant military and strategic role, was damaged by aerial bombardment during the Second World War. Many monuments were severely damaged. The reconstruction started immediately the day after the end of the war. However, operations were not limited to repairing damage, as the war offered an opportunity to continue the refurbishment of the historic town center started in the ‘thirties with the approval of the Piacentini master plan. Also, war damage offered the chance to increase volume and improve the road network.
