On the selection of psychoanalytic candidates Problems and limits of the selection of psychoanalysts are discussed. The selection methods of candidates for psychoanalytic training globally appear not valid and not reliable because of errors concerning the following areas: absence of candidates’ profile; different evaluations of objective (biography and experience) and subjective skills (psychological characteristics and motivations); variability in the conduction of selection interviews; inadequate competence of interviewers; uncertainty on the evaluation skills of non psychopathological traits; differences in the idea of training; presence of elements that interfere in the selection process (contingences, conveniences, pressures); lack of controls on the selection validity; groups dynamics of the selection committees. The selection process appears then casually efficient and scarcely effective. The psychoanalysts’ selection appears as an impossible profession, in opposition with the psychoanalytic values. [KEY WORDS: psychoanalysts’ selection, evaluation bias, personal and professional profile, technique of the selection interview, institutional and selection committee dynamics]
