The study is part of a research project funded in 2007 by the ISS as part of the National Research Program on AIDS. It is aimed to understand the reasons that can promote or impede access to HIV testing. The aim of the presented study was to analyze some descriptive aspects of social representation of HIV and AIDS, activating two dimensions of the knowledge: the emotional-evocative and the rational-cognitive ones. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 307 participants. The results relating to the content expressed in the emotionally-evocative dimension are consistent with those found in previous researches, and show that, alongside a scientific representation of HIV/AIDS, participants share images in which the moral evaluation prevail. The participants are aware that HIV is not the same thing of AIDS and that being HIV positive does not mean to be sick with AIDS, but only after the activation of a knowledge mediated cognitively they recognize more clearly the difference. The implications of these results for the prevention campaigns are discussed.
