The organization of community psychiatry in Reggio Emilia (a city in Northern Italy) is recounted through the author’s personal experience in the early 1970s. At the end of the 1960s, Giovanni Jervis, M.D. (1933- 2009), was appointed Director of the city’s Community Mental Health Centers. He was a psychiatrist and a well known intellectual who had originally worked with the anthropologist Ernesto De Martino, and who was just coming from the pioneering experience of deinstitutionalization in the psychiatric hospital of Gorizia with Franco Basaglia. The social and political life of Reggio Emilia of the time is described, and the experience of a group of young students who fought for the rights of mental patients and de-institutionalization of the psychiatric hospital is discussed. In those years, an alliance between leading politicians of the city and a group of professionals brought to the humanization and modernization of psychiatric care.
Keywords: Community psychiatry, de-institutionalization of psychiatric hospital, political sensibility and participation, modernization, social reform
