The sociology of organization has been borne with the sociology itself. Durkheim, Max Weber, Parsons were great organization theorist. Sociology of organization is a discipline which investigates into the birth, development, death of organizations and explores its structure and functions. Organizations are social artefacts designed toward multiple goals and made of processes, systems of coordination, division of labour, cultures. The article tries to give answers to the following questions: which is the identity of the disciplines? It copes with very important social problems? Is it intend only to describe and interpret or also to design organizations? Witch are the main issues? Along the exploration of international and Italian developments, the author support the idea that design is the main task of social sciences in front of the new generation of organizations. Some key issues are explored: new models of communities and production systems, job reform and organization design, joint design of technology and organization, planning of regional economics, shaping of organizational cultures.
