The author intends to develop a reflection on the possible causal links between certain tendencies of our contemporary era and the expression of new forms of discontents, by hypothesizing that the primitive anxieties are being exacerbated in our society because of an imperfect development of the thought processes to work out them. For the therapist, the delicate balance between the respect for the patient’s self determination and their own disalienating function reveals interesting and complex nuances. The reflection on society’s discomforts becomes an important epistemic indicator because it compels us to question ourselves with respect to what our beliefs are on what is developmental and what constitutes our ideal of a person’s subjectivization. If conformism is able to sabotage the identificatory process and to compromise the ideal of moral functioning due to adaptive restructuring, then it is crucial to be vigilant from both the ethical and clinical standpoint with respect to everything in today’s culture that opposes thought and causes one to fail to question one’s own existence.
