The paper deals with F. Carnelutti’s article, published in 1913 under the title: Studi sulle energie come oggetto di rapporti giuridici (Studies on energy as the object of legal relations). In this article something inanimate and intangible as energy is considered for the first time a "thing" and as such it becomes a theme of interest for the jurist. Our discussion is divided into four sections: firstly we rebuild Carnelutti’s definition of energy as a social problem. The second part emphasizes the problem of human energies. The third paragraph is closely related to the evolution of legal doctrine and focuses on the issue of energy as the norm. In the fourth section finally we outline the originality of Carnelutti’s contribution with reference to employment contract.
