The effects of the current economic crisis have hit in a very serious way young people in Sothern Italy. In these regions they do not only present high rates of unemployment but also low rate of participation, which implies their discouragement and consequent withdrawal from the labour market. The paper - on the basis of a survey carried out in a poor neapolitan suburb - describes and analyses the living conditions and the work trajectories of these underprivileged youngsters.
