Right at the beginning of the twentieth century, the city squares of Italy became the scene of a new kind of politics: the stage for socialist crowds, giving the working classes their first legal opportunity to express their opinions and participate in public life. Outdoor urban meetings, ultimately permitted by the authorities, threw into question the traditional view of political life as well as altered the self-perception of boroughs and communities. The article looks at the issue from the particular perspective of Venice and Veneto.
