This paper focuses on the political, juridical and social impact of education, looking at the English case as a relevant example. A process will be emphasized, gradually removing education from the philanthropic and charitable sphere, and giving it new ‘meanings’, such as that of ‘social duty’ and, then, that of a ‘legal right’. During this process, Wollstonecraft’s and Mill’s approaches are considered as fundamental, with reference also to the gender perspective, in understanding educational development as a necessary element for the human flourishing.
