The Editorial offers a profile of Sergio Marchionne, the manager who led Fiat from 2004 until his untimely death in 2018. Marchionne’s story is first of all located within the evolution of American management as it was the world from which he came. Particular attention is devoted to his strategy for rescuing Fiat, which is then placed in a wider context with the merger with Chrysler. His years at Fiat were marked not only by great successes but also by harsh conflicts with some important components of the trade unions. He also showed notable skills in confrontations with political leaders in both Italy as well as in the US. Marchionne was the typical manager who operated in a modern globalized world and he showed impatience whenever he encountered "local restrictions" to his strategies. While he obtained important results on the financial side, it remains unclear if they will be sustainable in the longer term.
