The article outlines the history of the Ernesto de Martino Institute (ISDM), an archive and research centre focused on oral history, popular culture and protest music. Founded by Gianni Bosio in the 1960s, the Institute is rooted in the activities of the Nuovo Canzoniere Italiano (Nci) and in its commitment to historical research. The article describes in detail the current holdings of the ISDM archive of oral sources and musical performances, prob-ably the largest in Italy.
