The two rituals analysed in this essay are the social celebrations organised by the anarchist movement and the reading of leftist newspapers by party members in São Paulo during the first decades of the twentieth century. Both are liminar experiences, in the sense that the activist separates himself/herself from present-day reality and lives for a time in an alternative and fictional world, as long as the ritual endures. It is then with a heightened awareness that he/she rejoins a transnational community based on solidarity and common ideals.
Keywords: Anarchism, Brazil, Sociability, Reading, Liminar ritual.
