In the last decade, the Italian school system passed through several transformations, in line with the logic of New Public Management. We hypothesize that these changes may have had negative effects on teachers’ job satisfaction. Adopting a labour sociology perspective, we analyze data coming from ISTAT Labour force survey and we compare teachers with other occupational groups, over time. We discover that teachers’ job satisfaction is not only high, but also that it increased in the time span here considered in this analysis, in contrast with our hypothesis. We conclude the article formulating possible interpretations of these unexpected results.
