The essay starts by analyzing Bergson’s relationship with the "negative critique of reason" to point out his participation in the cultural debate which, at the end of the XIXth century, translated the methodological difference between hard and spiritual sciences into the metaphysical distinction between nature and spirit. The aim of the essay is in fact to show the way in which the French philosopher translated the German dicotomy Kultur-Zivilisation in his own philosophical language structured around "substance" and "spirit", re-interpreting it as an axiological hierarchy. Secondly the author shows that Bergson adopted the same dicotomies used by German philosophy to account for the crisis of contemporary society. Cornerstone of Bergsonian works after the First World War is in fact the problem of the "enstrangement" of human beings in industrial society.
