Taking the move from the recent publishing of the two "Essays on Political Science" volumes (1999-2000) by the German student, and in particular from a very convincing historiographic contribution of his, the essay proposes a short biography of Hennis and his works. Beginner, in Germany, of what is known as the "rehabilitation of practical philosophy", Hennis put forward, differently from Arendt, Strauss, and Voegelin, a version which tries to combine the anglo-american liberal-democratic tradition with the forms and values of German political thought. For his critical attitude toward contructivist and ideological rationalism his position may be compared, within European culture, to that of a great conservative, Michael Oakeshott.
