The starting point of this paper, Nomotropism: Acting with Reference to Rules, is the reconstruction of three paradigms set out in Theodor Geiger's philosophical deontics: (i) norm [in German: Norm] vs. norm-sentence [Normsatz]; (ii) proclamative norm-sentence [proklamativer Normsatz] vs. declarative normsentence [deklarativer Normsatz]; (iii) deontic (or nomotropic) regularity [Regelmässigkeit] vs. adeontic (or non-nomotropic) regularity [Regelhaftigkeit]. The first section (1. Deontic rule vs. adeontic rule) is a contribution to deontics. Herein a new paradigm is set out: deontic rule vs. adeontic rule. The second section (2. Deontic or nomotropic regularity vs. adeontic or non-nomotropic regularity) is a contribution to the sociology of law. Conte's paradigm: deontic (or nomotropic) regularity vs. adeontic (or non-nomotropic) regularity is a development of Theodor Geiger's paradigm: Regelmässigkeit vs. Regelhaftigkeit. The third section (3. Hermeneutics of action: acting with reference to rules) is a contribution to the hermeneutics of action. Firstly, it deals with the presuppositions of the question: "With reference to which rule does an agent act?" Secondly, it highlights the problem of the idiographic sense of action. ("Idiographic", spelt with an "i" and not with an "e" is the English translation of "idiographisch", the outstanding neologism of Wilhelm Windelband).
