During recent years the relationship between Italian journalists and politicians has gone through deep changes, from an almost paradigmatic example of parallelism to a frequently open conflict. The interpretative hypothesis put suggested in this article is that Italian political journalism is still suffering from a lack, more than from an excess, of autonomy in linking politics and citizens. And that under the more adversarial relationship with political actors there is a difficulty finding less self-referential forms of political communication because of the never ended transition of the Italian democracy towards a majoritarian model. In order to document this hypothesis, the article is divided into two complementary parts. The first considers the phenomenon within the theoretical framework centered on a systemic analysis and documents the main features of the structure of Italian political communication. The second part reconstructs the most important changes in the relationship between journalists and politicians, focusing on continuities and discontinuities among different phases and exploring the representation of the crisis proposed in the press and public debates.
