Management knowledge - maneggiare con cura. L'introduzione di forme di managerialismo nella storia del British Museum (di Luca Zan) - ABSTRACT: During the late twenty years, several changes in the institutional and economic environment in all major western countries have contributed to reconsider the role and the activities of Universities. In this paper we first present some aggregated data documenting the international decrease of public funding of research activities, the introduction of structural reforms altering the traditional structure and mission of Universities and the changes observed in private investments in R&D. We then focus on the specific changes along these lines introduced in Italy by several recent legislative reforms, starting with the full application of Law 168/89. Universities’ incentives to leverage on their internal competencies to increase their ability to profit from research activities are examined in detail with specific reference to a pool of initiatives such as OTT, ILO, incubators, and business plan competition. Indications on specific actions and strategies to pursue these different organizational goals are derived by applying research results on correlated diversification strategies and on micro-organizational change.
