In many currents of twentieth century thought, the point of philosophy appeared problematic because of the widespread naturalistic assumption according to which only physical and psychological states of affairs exist. This assumption made it difficult to understand what the object of philosophical reflection could be. The point of philosophy becomes clearer, once we acknowledge that there are also normative facts, including the principles of thought and action, which constitute the proper object of philosophy.
