Sustainable Development and Bio-region - In 1819, during the first industriaI revolution, Sismondi 's economic theory identified the "dark side" ofdevelopment in the space-time obstacles that hamper and/or divert its driving force. The ecological imprint method leads us to suppose that the "dark side" of development may be now be a market compression of natural life by economie activities, in terms of both of production and of consumption. The "localized" ecological imprint method suggests another scenario, within a bioregional perspective, where agriculture maintains its historical role as equilibrium factor between the rural and urban worlds. This information is to be transferred into the tacit knowledge of the decision makers, in the context of cooperative work towards a negotiated planning policy aiming at sustainable local development with the social role of agriculture and agricultural economists looming larger.
