Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not only a fact of modern agriculture, but they are also a fact of public preoccupation and opinion, which politician must take into account. In Italy one of the central problem is to estimate the convenience of agriculture to produce GMOs and above all to understand if the GMOs can be compatible with the characteristics and the requirements of development of the Italian agriculture. In consideration of that, the problem of the employment of the OGM from part of the Italian agriculture is analyzed in reference to the following aspects: the productive characteristics of Italian agricultural and food-system; territorial characteristics of the Italian agriculture; the expectations of the society and, in particular, of the consumers regard to the role of agriculture in the society; the presence of GMOs on the market; the role of the research; the protection of the consumer; the evolution of the communitarian and national legislation.
