In the last 20 years the public sector at the international level has been involved in a wide process of change focused on the managerialization of several administrations. At the basis of the change lies the shift toward a performance based accountability, which is itself strictly linked to a greater autonomy of the individual entities. This article analyses the introduction of a special autonomous status in the peripheral administration of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage (the Soprintendenze), with the aim of underline the operative effects of the managerialization process. What emerges from the field analysis, strongly supported by several New Public Management studies, is a seriously critical process, with a specific role of the Italian law system and culture: in the Italian case the managerialization process crashes with the giuridification context, which weakens and changes in unexpected directions the supposed meaning of the managerial language.
