Umberto Cerroni: Democracy, Socialism and Law ABSTRACT: The author commemorates the philosopher of law Umberto Cerroni, who passed away recently. Cerroni was the first scholar to devote critical attention to the relationship between Marx and law. Numerous studies about the injustices inherent in bourgeois law had been published in the tradition of academic socialism, but no author before Cerroni had ever taken a philologically rigorous stance to tackle Marx’s legal thinking. Cerroni analysed Marx’s critique of Hegel’s philosophy of public law and then the legal thinking of communism in practice. Cerroni also deserves to be remembered for his analysis of democracy in the formation of modern society. This scholar saw democratic participation, universal suffrage and the equal distribution of political rights as a precondition for modernity and social development.
