The term « fundamentalism», born in the American protestant world in the 1920s and later applied also to other religions, is widely used but scarcely defined and explained, especially from a politological perspective. This essay tries to fill the void, first of all reviewing the main theories about this concept, from the early works of the 1980s, to the Fundamentalism Project, to other interpretations (fundamentalism as clash of civilizations, totalitarianism, consequence of globalisation, etc.). Then, the essay integrates these points of view with some politological and sociological theories about social movements and collective action, and proposes a detailed definition of « fundamentalist movement».
