Periurban agriculture and rural development strategies: a comment Urban sprawl and new residential preferences in rural areas are the main driving factor behind the increase in periurban spatial assets at the regional level. In this respect periurbanity tends increasingly to be a stable and permanent condition of an area, and not only a phase of transition from rural to urban. At the same time the agricultural activities conducted in these areas are becoming increasingly differentiated from those ones performed in the rural areas. The European regulations on rural development (Reg. CE 1698/05) seem to take into account this new territorial perspective, attributing to rural periurban areas an autonomous condition and gearing specific intervention strategies to them. In this paper a summary analysis is made of the main features of periurban agriculture and the role they can have in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of rural development interventions for the 2007-2013 programming period.
