Italy of the "Miracolo" on the Screen. Notes on Cinema and History (by Pietro Cavallo) - The first part of the essay considers the works of those scholars who used movies as sources of history, from Kracauer, with is theory of the mirroring (films reflect the mentality of a country within a specific time) to Pierre Sorlin who affirms that films do not reflect society herself, but rather the way society intends to represent herself. Furthermore the article underlines how films have been history makers in the sense they induced new patterns of life, mostly because they changed the perception of reality. In the second part of the essay there are some examples of the possible use of movies as sources of history taken from the Italian production of the years in which Italy became an industrial country, the years of the Italian miracle, the mid Fifties and the beginning of the Sixties.
