"Nationalizing" the Press: The Conflict between Fascism and Local Clergy in Alto Adige-South Tyrol (1921-1933) - The article, which is based on unpublished documents of the Italian Archivio Centrale dello Stato and of the Archivio Segreto Vaticano (1921-1933), deals with the creation of a Fascist press with a strong national Italian mark in Alto Adige. This Fascist initiative had the goal of the nationalization of the local German population. While Italian school was called to transform local new generations according with the model of the Italian Fascist one, press would be an appropriate tool introducing the new Fascist Italy to local population. In order to pursuit such a goal a great economic effort was done; nevertheless, results were poor. The existence of a rich and powerful Catholic press in German language in the area was the main factor of this failure; in fact this press represented the real obstacle Fascism had to confront with in order to conquer morally the German speaking population. On the other hand, Catholic press was also developing its own national function preserving the German characteristic of the region, and it had Vatican’s protection to support its autonomy towards Fascism.
