Vatican and Franco’s Spain: the Fuero del trabajo (March 1938) - The editor publishes with an introduction documents which come from the Vatican Secret Archives and which help to reconstruct the attitude of the ecclesiastical hierarchy in front of the Fuero dei Trabajo, signed by Franco in March 1938 and inspired on Mussolini’s Carta del Lavoro. Although set in a different context (the Civil War in Spain), the documents raise the issue of the Vatican perception of a totalitarian danger. In spite of some criticisms and reservations, however, the overall Vatican assessment of the Fuero was positive. It is also possible to identify some analogies in this attitude of the Church with the one taken with Italian Fascism, in particular the role of guarantor assigned to the dictator and the conciliatory function of the social issue between Church and regime.
