Agrarian Academies in eighteenth-century Italy. Historical development and social features - The author outlines the chronological development of agrarian academies in eighteenth century Italy and connects it with the cultural, social, economic and political context in the various states concerned. The author points out common traits and dissimilarities between different areas, the changing relationship between the State and civil society, the links between local patriotism and cosmopolitan inclinations. Thr eclectical nature and the limits of the movement are also dealt with, as are historiographical debates and questions still open for research.
