The purpose of this article is to highlight the significance of Francesca Cappelletto' s contribution to the renewal of Alpine anthropology. After outlining the development of anthropological research in the Alps in the course of the twentieth century, it follows the anthropological formation and the early stages of the career of this scholar, then focusing on the studies she conducted between 1984 and 1992 in Bagolino, a community in the Italian Central Alps, where she paid special attention to the analysis of carnival rituals. The final sections of the article show how this careful, long-term investigation managed to combine two different styles of fieldwork, thereby providing a rare example of methodological balance which can help not only Alpine anthropology, but anthropology more generally, to avoid the pitfalls of superficiality while making the most of the suggestions offered by diverse and seemingly conflicting theoretical orientations.
