The memory of Nazifascist slaughters of civilians, perpetrated during German occupation of Italy in 1944, has been a central topic in Francesca Cappelletto’s anthropological work. More particularly, Francesca has been doing for almost 15 years ethnographical research in two Tuscan martyr villages, Civitella Val di Chiana e Sant’Anna di Stazzema. In this paper, I try to briefly sketch four important and original aspects of Francesca’s studies: a) the notion of "mnemonic community" as the main subject of public practices of remembrance; b) her critical remarks about the classical notion of "collective memory", and about the role of conflict in shaping public memories; c) the relation between narratives and images in generational transmission of war memories; d) cognitive and ethical problems concerning the relation between researcher and informants in the field of traumatic memory.
