"The distant roar of the sea" - During the second half of the 19th century, the coastal areas and their immediate hinterland , which often includes humid zones, have undergone a dramatic alteration owing to the use of technologies based on steam engines: this further confirms the limited link existing between the sea on one side, Italian cultural values and political action on the other.

Keywords: Italy; coastal fringe; steam engines.
