According to M. Mazzone, in his comments on my book Perché non siamo speciali, a modular model of cognitive architecture can hardly explain the flexibility of human behavior. My reply is based on the analysis of the role of intelligence in the processes of linguistic comprehension and production. I maintain that intelligence is a property of the mind as a whole and not a specific faculty. It follows that we cannot reduce intelligence to the executive functions, as M. Mazzone seems to suggest. The interaction of the cognitive systems, far from hampering the flexibility of the mind, is one of its conditions.
Keywords: Executive functions, Flexibility, Homunculus, Intelligence, Language comprehension and production, Modularity of mind.
