The Author examines the countertransference reactions and the traumatic effects on analytic couple in analyst’s serious bodily illness. A literature review ranges among diametrically opposite theoretical and clinical perspectives. The inescapable intrusion into analytical space of intensely traumatic elements of reality concerning the analyst alters the relational field, mobilizing fantasies, defences and emotions in both the analyst and the patient. The Author presents some clinical vignettes, taken from her personal experience, to illustrate her conceptual and technical point of view about the matter under examination.
