In this paper the author describes the situation of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy in a pro bono setting. When, for economic reasons, a therapist has to modify the setting, introducing a change which excludes the payment of the sessions, some variations of the therapist/patient relationship may occur. These may help the development of the patient and her/his relations with her/his internal objects. The paper starts with an examination of the current literature of this issue, with the factors which can lead to a pro bono therapy and also examines the dangers which can arise. An exemplification is made describing the case of an adolescent treated in a psychoanalytic psychotherapy, whose mother, for intrinsic reasons regarding her relationship with her daughter, decided to stop the payment of the therapy.
