This is a short study of a group made up of a number of individuals and couples (N=14) who have taken on the role of foster parents. The group has met regularly for three years with a facilitator, to discuss their experience of being foster parents. Some of the group had grown up independent children and so were no longer directly involved in parenting; others were grandparents or became grandparents during the three year study. All had chosen to resume the parental role, this time in a more complex and problematic way: by taking into their homes children or teenagers with problems in their lives. The problem of these young people and the complications that go with them often go unnoticed by the support services put in place for the foster parents by child protection agencies. The article gives evidence for this.
