This article analyzes the impacts of international migration on the organization of gender, youth and migrant families in Ecuador. It ar-gues for a more profound understanding of the contexts of departure that may overcome the dichotomy origin/destination. Secondly, it seeks to break with the dichotomy between family disintegration and stable transnational families by showing that migration results in a series of stable and unstable arrangements among families that vary according to many factors. Third, it shows that impacts on families and communities are not unilineal: migration can be a strong social classifier in rural contexts while much more diffuse in urban envi-ronment
Keywords: International migration - gender - family - social mobility
