Not even Italy was immune to the attractions of colonialism at the end of the nineteenth century. The «Corriere della sera» immediately adopted a cautious stance on the subject. Hence, when the Italian bersaglieri landed at Massawa in February 1885, the Milanese newspaper was highly guarded in its judgement of the government’s colonial policy decisions. Nor did this attitude change following some important military successes. The defeat at Adwa in March 1896 bore out these warnings, in bitterly tragic fashion of its correspondents, Vico Mantegazza and Adolfo Rossi, in recounting events that would mark the history of Italy with impressive lucidity.
