The transformations in medicine relating to life’s beginning and end have contributed to change our moral culture. Various philosophical trends consider respect for such natural processes as incompatible with freedom of choice and responsibility. This paper suggests that respect for the natural constitution of human beings, argued by authors from Kant to Habermas, can be defended along with the value of freedom and responsibility affirmed by liberals in the tradition of J.S. Mill.
