The present economic and financial crisis is characterized by causes and dynamics at the global level, but its effects are deeply differentiated in geographic and spatial terms, also at the urban level. Some studies have been produced about these effects on big financial cities, not on cities which still have a strong industrial component. Through the analysis of some socioeconomic indicators, the article shows how the crisis impacted the area of Turin in 2009 more strongly than other Italian metropolitan areas: the reason can be found in the transition phase of the city, with an industrial sector too little differentiated and orientated towards Asian markets, and a scarcely productive tertiary sector.
