The politics for historical centres rehabilitation in Iraq is marked by serious lacks and by the conflicts concerning the making of an inclusive and shared cultural identity. Following its evolution the author points out the controversial contribution given by modernity, bearer of new identity values but also responsible of the removal of the historical city’s values. The paper deals with the aftermaths of such a contradiction, presenting some interventions today underway, where an paradoxical notion of heritage puzzles both the cultural and the technical responses, opening to disruptive choices.
