The couple is conceived as a loving dual (duale amoroso), in contrast with the individualistic and intra-psychic vision that has historically structured the therapeutic intervention on the couple. The I-subject becomes itself in the interaction with the other, and this process is facilitated by love. The law of functionality is also presented, a law that has nothing to do with projection, introjection, or projective identification. Functionality is a reading key to all relationships, particularly to falling in love, sharing everyday life and going through the inevitable crisis that accompanies the couple’s evolution. Some clinical vignettes coming from the experience of the psychoanalytic intervention on the couple accompany the theoretical explanation. The couple, by itself or with the help, when necessary, of the psychoanalyst, is a precious tool for the growth of the Isubject: "I am you and you are me!".
