Through an analysis of unpublished sources, the essay reconstructs Aldo Moro's use of television between 1959 and 1963, that is, during the preparation of the centerleft coalition. The Christian Democratic Party showed more interest in the use of TV as a political medium after the convention of Naples (1962), but only with the leadership of Aldo Moro - and the beginning of the series of political interviews "Tribuna elettorale" - did television began to play a key role in building political consensus and prove to be an essential tool within the Italian political system. The author stresses in particular the way in which television responded to three fundamental necessities during the period of the so-called «opening to the left»: the legitimization of the Socialist Party; the emphasis on the central role of the party (and not of the cabinet); the new autonomy of the Christian Democratic Party from the Catholic Church.
