This article explores the evolution of forms of urban life, focusing on the expansion of private security technologies and the diffusion of gated com- munities in Brazil, United States and Italy. The analysis highlights different dimensions of processes of separation and imprisonment, which are based on space (horizontal and vertical) and time (velocity). A main issue stands in the background: the fear of what is different and the difficulties of dealing with differences in new urban contexts.
