The phenomenon of the participation of immigrants in self-employment is growing significantly in Europe, according to a tendency past time found overseas. It’s probably the most important news occurring in the last twenty years in the relations between immigrant workers and receiving economic systems. The article explores extent and limits of the economic, social and cultural innovation activities assignable to the independent activities promoted by immigrants on the basis of empirical researches conducted in Milan, Turin and Genoa, with particular emphasis on initiatives with cross-border nature. It also considers the dark side represented by the local resistance to these new actors and phenomena of urban economies.
