My aim in this work is the comparison between Donald Winnicott and Gregory Bateson about play and imitation. Tagore said that children build worlds, by creating and imitating. The children invent in-between worlds. They create by imitating and imitate by creating. Giambattista Vico observed that the children have imagination, imitation and memory. Imagination needs imitation and memory, because they do not create out of nothing, but out of something and this is something given by what they saw, heard, touched. A new world, a in-between world, produced by the imagination, arises from the imitation and the memory of another world.
Keywords: Children, play, imitation, memory, imagination, in-between worlds
