The recent difficulties in the bilateral relations between the Republic of San Marino and Italy, which have lately sowing the first seeds of a widespread social conflict, require a new analysis of the international relations of the Republic of San Marino in the current context of crisis of the national state and widespread political and financial globalization. Starting from the analysis of some historical data, the article describes the wide international relations of the Republic of San Marino by referring both to the institutional relations which date back to 1862 and to parallel networks, and specifically the International Paneuropean Union. Considering the diffusion of the Small State model in Europe, the article then focuses on the possible perspectives that Small European States in general, and the Republic of San Marino in particular, may have in the relation with big supernational unions, and foremost with the European Union, and with Italy.
