This article emphasizes the compensatory role of the unconscious as a distinguishing element of the therapeutic practice of analytical psychology. Each person’s subjectivity is obliged to face up to the autonomous reality of unconscious manifestations within a dynamic and transformative relationship between one’s personal inner world and collective external reality. What is established is a deep, vital bond, capable of reactivating the balance in psychic energy which in turn allows for transformations to take place in the present. If the resulting contradictions, risk and subsequent choices take from within this compensatory relationship, they will foster a coming to consciousness which is ethically responsible and the changes which take place in one’s conscious horizons will go far beyond simple questions of adaptation.
